How to Look After your Garden Fence this Winter

The harsh winter weather plays havoc with our gardens and it is important at this time of the year that you regularly check your garden for signs of wear and tear, as rain, sleet snow and wind can cause significant damage to parts of your garden if left unchecked.

The main thing that you should keep an eye on over the winter is your fence – being made of wood, a fence is not immune to what the wintery elements throw at it and although treating it with protective paints can help, ultimately it may need parts replacing through the years.

Check all parts of your fence monthly throughout winter – the vertical posts, as well as the panels and the horizontal posts. This way, if you notice any signs of damage you can do a quick repair job which will prevent the damage from getting much worse the next time there is a storm or a bout of bad weather.

It is a good idea to always have tools and wood on hand – find a good supplier such as this timber merchants Southampton based Timbco who will be able to supply you with a range of different types of wood depending on what your fence requires.

It is also worth keeping an eye on the parts of your fence lower down – as fence posts are deep underground these parts will not be as protected from the damp, so if you notice a wobbling, it may be that the post has rotted underground and needs to be replaced.
