Autumn Jobs to Get on With Now in the Garden

Now that we are starting to experience the arrival of autumn, this is the time to spend a bit of time giving some love to your garden. This period of time where the weather is turning and the days are getting shorter, but we have not yet reached the winter, is the perfect time of year to clear out your garden and spend some time tidying it up, and when next spring arrives you will thank yourself for putting in the hard work in the autumn!

The first thing to do is to get rid of the things that you don’t need, so that you don’t have rubbish cluttering up your garden whilst you are working. If you have a lot to get rid of, or a large garden, you might want to think about contacting someone like this Swansea skip hire company and having a skip, as this will save you making lots of trips to the local tip!

Clear out anything that is broken or damaged, and won’t be fit for use next year, as well as cutting back bushes and trees that have become unruly. You might want to get a tree surgeon to help you with this if it involves cutting back anything that is particularly high up. Plants are now out of their growth phase, so this is the best time to cut them back.

You can also spend some time doing any repairs that are needed. Outdoor structures such as sheds, greenhouses and your fence are all things that you should check and repair if necessary – when the weather worsens throughout the winter, this will prevent them from becoming more damaged or even dangerous.

Check the plants that you have in your garden and those that are not able to survive colder temperatures should be protected. You can keep plants that need to be warmer in pots in the greenhouse if you have one, or you can use some material to cover them when it gets colder, especially at night.

Now is also a great time to plant spring bulbs! Daffodils, tulips, crocus and iris are all bulbs that you can plant now that will give your garden a burst of colour when spring arrives.
